Houston - Caywood's perspective
Houston: traffic, traffic, traffic! We went to Houston solely to see a good friend of mine from college, and I am surely glad we only stayed for a few hours. Apparently, this city is well-known for its never-ending traffic! And we surely got to experience it.
Other than the traffic jam that made us late, we went to a great lunch spot to have some real Tex Mex: El Tiempo Cantina. I got my first ever brisket taco… amazing! Basically this is what I have to say: great food, great service, cheap prices, and big portions! Oh, and these really awesome antique teal entry doors. Check this place out, y’all. We had lunch in Houston with my friend Seth from college, and Seth and I got to introduce our fiancés. He got to meet Feliks for the first time, and I met his fiancé Jenni for the first time… finally! It was great to see them and catch up with an old friend. Totally worth the Texas traffic.
As we headed out of Houston after lunch we passed by an amazing yard full of junk metal, metal creatures, and one-of-a-kind machines. This place turned out to be the workshop of a local Houston artist Mark Bradford, better known as Scrapdaddy. Since Feliks has worked on cars all of his life and has dabbled in art, he obviously loved this place. But so did I! It was amazing all of the unique pieces Mark had done. He’s been working with metal artistry for over 25 years - please take a few to check out some of the pictures below.
My advice from our experience:
1. Don’t drive in Houston
2. Be ready for lots of overpasses. Apparently Texas loves overpasses.

Houston - Feliks' perspective
We originally had Houston on the map, but after further review we removed it, and then added it back on a week before we got there. We stopped in Houston to have lunch with Caywood’s old college friend and to meet his fiancé. We had lunch at El Tiempo Cantina, where they had the most amazing house salsa I’ve ever had. They had two salsas. The red salsa came out warm and was a little bit spicy, but had a good texture of chunk versus sauce. The other salsa was green, almost like guacamole paste, but tasted nothing like guacamole; a little bit of sweet, a little bit of salty… a perfect combination with the red sauce. Very good Mexican food overall.
After lunch we were off to Austin, and as we headed out of town we drove past the craziest metal sculptures I have ever seen. They weren’t just art. They were moving art. And we later found out that they guy’s style is “metal in motion.” We couldn’t help ourselves but stop and check out the metal freak show. I can’t even describe what most of it was; all I can say is that you need to see it to believe it. The pictures we took don’t even do justice to the detail and complexity of some of these sculptures. The artist’s name was Mark Bradford and he gave us a little insight to the piece he was currently working on, which was going on top of some commercial building. Can’t really say much else on Houston, except for it was huge. And I felt sorry for the people stuck in traffic going North on 45.
